6.1 Research Awards & Funding Opportunities

  • Junior Faculty Development Award
  • Reassignment of Duties
  • Small Grants Program
  • Support for International Travel to Conferences

Faculty are able to find support for their research and creative activity in a number of offices at both the university and college level.

Those faculty who are engaged in seeking external funding for their research and creative activity should consult the CLAS Office of Sponsored Research.

In addition, the College provides the following programs to support research:

  • The Junior Faculty Development Program
  • Reassignment of Duties Program
  • Small Grants Program
  • Support for International Travel to Conferences

Research & Economic Development
The University provides specific support for faculty research through the following:

  • Faculty Research Grants Program
  • Office of Proposal Development

For those faculty who receive fellowship funding that will support full-time research for a semester or a year, with the approval of the Dean, the College normally provides subvention, up to 50% of the faculty member’s salary. If the subvention amount needed is more than 50%, a special request to the Dean is required.

Junior Faculty Development Award

The College Junior Faculty Development Award Program is a means by which UNC Charlotte facilitates continued professional development among its non-tenured faculty. It provides institutional encouragement and support to the faculty in their efforts to increase knowledge through instructional, research, and service activities that are valued by the University.

For more information about the Junior Faculty Development Award program, see:

  • Junior Faculty Development Award
  • Junior Faculty Development Application Form

Reassignment of Duties

The College Reassignment of Duties Program is a means by which UNC Charlotte facilitates continued professional development among its faculty.  It provides institutional encouragement and support to the faculty in their efforts to increase knowledge through instructional, research, and service activities that are valued by the University.    It enriches the intellectual life of the university through the encouragement of diversity and by promoting the scholarly and creative activities of the faculty. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Reassignment of Duties program is named after Schley R. Lyons (Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences from 1985 to 2005) in recognition of his efforts to support the scholarly and creative activities of the faculty.

For more information about this program, including eligibility, award information, application format and procedures, review information, and supplemental pay and continuation of benefits, please consult the document for the Schley R. Lyons Tenured Faculty Reassignment of Duties Program, see:

  • Tenured Reassignment of Duties
  • Reassignment of Duties Application Form

Small Grants Program

The CLAS small grants program has been redefined.  Faculty in need of funding up to $1,500 for a specific teaching or research expense should make a direct email request to the dean and copy both the chair and the appropriate associate dean (e.g. Academic and Student Support, Research and Graduate Education, etc.). Please note that this funding now can be used for pedagogical expenses, as well as for research.

Requests can be made at any time during the year. Since this support is dependent on the availability of college resources, requests that come mid-year or later may not be funded. The dean and the appropriate associate dean will make the decision and inform the faculty member within a week’s time.

Some examples include the following (this is not an exhaustive list):

  • Travel to collections and archives
  • Specialized supplies and minor research equipment, such as software, digital recorders, etc. (this equipment is the property of the state)
  • Index preparation
  • Subvention costs for publication
  • Permission costs for reproduction of images
  • Research participant incentives (per state regulations)
  • RA support for a specific project (usually calculated in a fixed number of hours)
  • Implementation of new pedagogies
  • Professional development opportunities related to unit goals.

Funds may not be used for expenses covered by other funding sources, presentations at professional meetings, or student travel (unless for university business).

Support for International Travel to Conferences

The Dean’s Office normally provides supplemental support to faculty who are presenting their research at international conferences or symposiums. The faculty member must make a request electronically to the Dean, via the following online form, see:
CLAS Support for International Travel Form (This program is currently not receiving requests.)

Funding is provided on a first-come, first-served basis, as this support is dependent on the availability of college resources. Requests that come mid-year or later may not be funded. (This program is currently not receiving requests.)
